Sustainability in Language Education:

Practices That Endure

Monterey, CA

 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Foreign Language Association of Northern California (FLANC) conference is an annual event that offers the second language learning community the opportunity to discuss emerging trends and challenges in world language education. Submissions based on practical platform teaching experiences will receive priority consideration. Each session will consist of a 30-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute question period.

This year’s conference theme is Sustainability in Language Education: Practices That Endure

We invite submissions for proposals that explore innovative approaches to language teaching and learning. This theme emphasizes enduring, research-informed practices that support the success of second language learners. It encourages educators to consider which approaches consistently build proficiency, foster learner autonomy, and maintain effectiveness across diverse contexts. The focus is on pedagogical clarity, meaningful interaction, and instructional routines that promote sustained, measurable growth. By centering on practices grounded in second language acquisition research, the theme invites participants to examine how intentional design, ongoing feedback, and adaptable methodologies can create lasting learning experiences that benefit a wide range of learners.

Proposals may include, but are not limited to:

  • Approaches that build learner confidence, motivation, and persistence.

  • Approaches that foster cultural competence and inclusivity in language education.

  • Assessment designs that reflect real-world language use and durable proficiency

  • Classroom practices that build sustained proficiency over time

  • Designing tasks that promote authentic interaction and negotiation of meaning

  • Feedback cycles that help learners track progress and set meaningful goals

  • Feedback practices that promote continuous growth and self-monitoring.

  • Formative assessment practices that guide instruction and support long-term growth

  • Long-term support for multilingual learners with varying educational backgrounds.

  • Methods for reducing cognitive overload and supporting long-term retention
